DIY Colorful Abstract Feature Wall

This is something that I did in my home office. All the walls were gray, and I wanted some pops of color. I decided to paint an abstract feature wall with a bunch of leftover paint that I had from other projects. It was easy and basically cost nothing as I used supplies, I already had. You can do this cheaply even if you need to buy a few small bottles of paint.

Supplies

  • 1 roll of 1-inch-wide painter’s tape. I use FROGTAPE as it works the best. Don’t skimp on the tape as you don’t want the paint to bleed. I’ve found that other brands just aren’t as good.
  • Several paint brushes. I used different sizes and even a foam brush. Some of the areas you section off might be large so you can use a larger brush or even a roller and some areas may be very small.
  • A sponge or washcloth to clean the surface before you begin.
  • Several different colors of paint. You can use a variety of paint types as well. I had some leftover wall paint that I used as well as a small bottle of dark gray craft paint. Using different colors and types of paint will give the wall more dimension and texture.

Instructions/Steps

  • First take a damp sponge or cloth and wash the wall. Use mild soapy water if the wall is very dusty or dirty.
  • Once the wall is dry then tape a border along each end of the wall from the baseboard to the celiling. Apply the tape to the inside of the wall along corners at the top and bottom so that the wall appears to be framed in the existing color of the wall.
  • The existing color of the wall will become the color of the background lines so if you want to change that color, then you will need to paint the entire wall beforehand and make sure it is completely dry (recommend a few days) before starting the design.
  • Now you want to start taping your design on the wall. You don’t need a pattern. I just winged it and started taping in one corner. Take a look at the pictures and you will get the idea. You just want to tape off random shapes. You can play around and remove and reapply tape if you don’t like how your design is shaping up. Before you know it the entire wall will be taped with an abstract design!
  • Next you will start to paint in the shapes. Do one color at a time. Choose random areas but scatter them so you don’t have 2 areas of the same color next to each other. I needed to do 2-3 coats per color to fill it in nice and solid.
  • Once you have painted all of the shapes then it’s time to remove the tape. The tape should come off easily and reveal clean lines underneath. You may need to touch up a line here and there but that’s normal.
  • Now you are done. Sit back, relax and enjoy your new feature wall!
