How to Make DIY Colorful Outdoor Lights: Easy & Budget-Friendly Guide

Adding a pop of color to your outdoor space is a great way to make it more inviting, and upgrading your outdoor string lights is an easy and budget-friendly way to do it! When I was decorating my small balcony, I realized my outdoor solar string bulb lights were looking a bit dull after a couple of seasons. Instead of replacing them, I decided to refresh them with some vibrant colors—and it was so simple! You can buy a standard solar set like these new as well and paint them.

If you have string lights with an aluminum base like these or similar, you can easily paint them for a fresh new look. Follow this step-by-step guide to bring your outdoor lights back to life!

Step 1: Remove the Bulbs

Most outdoor string lights have plastic bulbs, but if yours are glass, you can still remove them easily. Simply unscrew each bulb from its base and set them aside in a safe place.

Step 2: Choose Your Colors

Now comes the fun part—choosing your colors! You can go for a mix of bright hues, a monochromatic scheme, or any combination that fits your decor style. I used craft acrylic paint because it comes in a variety of colors and adheres well to different surfaces. Here are some great options:

To protect your workspace, lay out a plastic drop cloth or hang your lights in a designated painting area.

Step 3: Paint the Bulb Bases

Using a small brush, apply 2-3 coats of paint to each bulb base, allowing each coat to dry completely before adding the next. If you want a clean edge near the cord, use painter’s tape, but I found that careful painting kept the color where I wanted it.

Step 4: Seal for Durability

Once the paint is fully dry (after several hours), apply a clear protective sealer. You can use either a brush-on or spray sealer to protect the paint from outdoor elements.

Allow the sealant to dry overnight for the best results.

Step 5: Reassemble & Enjoy!

Once everything is completely dry, screw the bulbs back into place and hang up your refreshed string lights. They’ll look stunning, and your friends will be asking where you got them!

Now, sit back, relax, and enjoy your beautifully lit outdoor space. For more patio decor inspiration, check out my other posts.
